Clerk of works

Employed by the client in a construction project, the job of the Clerk of Works (CoW) is to keep an eye on the building works.

Employed by the client in a construction project, the job of the Clerk of Works (CoW) is to inspect the building works to make sure the specification and drawings are being followed.

Small scale tenement repair projects rarely employ a clerk of works. 

Membership of the Clerk of Works Institute is advisable.

The CoW will make regular visits to the site  to check that the work is carried out to the required standard using good workmanship, the correct specifications and materials. If there is a problem, the CoW will report to the architect. 

Cost of using a CoW

You can hire clerk of works on an hourly rate but you will have to pay for their travel time as well. Rates of about £30 an hour plus VAT should be expected.
